Netherlands beat South Africa (2023 World Cup)

South Africa was looking very dangerous after they scored highest ever ODI World Cup total against Sri Lanka. Not only they beat Sri Lanka, but also the five-time world champion Australia by 134 runs. However, in the 15^th match of the tournament at Dharamsala, Dutch beat Proteas which has been called as the biggest upset in ODI World Cup history by the experts. Netherlands recorded their first ever win against a test playing nation in One Day International world cups. 

Netherlands’ start was not good, they were 82/5, but the captain Scott Edwards and the tail played exceptionally successfully managing 245/8 on the board in a 43-overs match. After that they bowled brilliantly and bowled South Africa out at 207 grabbing a 38-runs victory.   

Afghanistan beat England (2023 World Cup)

Afghanistan, a team with only one victory in previous two world cups (2015 & 2019) defeated the defending champions. The 13^th match of the world cup in Dehli witnessed a major upset and a setback for England. After winning the toss, England opted to bowl. Afghanistan gave a target of 285 runs in 50 overs. In reply, wickets fell on regular intervals and England was all out on 215. Afghanistan got an incredible win by 69 runs. This was one of the memorable moments in Afghanistan cricket history.

Ireland beat England (2011 World Cup)

In the 15^th match of the world cup at Bengaluru, Ireland created history by chasing highest ever total in world cups. This was unexpected. Kevin O’Brien scored the 49-ball fastest hundred in the ODI world cup history. He scored 113 runs in just 63 balls. Ireland successfully chased down the target of 329 runs in the last over beating England by 3 wickets.

Bangladesh beat India (2007 World Cup)

ODI world cup 2007 witnessed a big upset when India lost to Bangladesh by 5 wickets. India was famous for producing legendary batters, but that day they failed. The Bengal Tigers bowled India out at 191 runs. Mashrafe Mortaza took four wickets. In the second innings, Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim scored half-centuries and guided Bangladesh to a win in the 49^th over.  

Ireland beat Pakistan (2007 World Cup)

World Cup 2007 proved a tournament of upsets. Pakistan team, which is famous for its unpredictability, was beaten by Ireland. Pakistan scored just 132 runs in Kingston. Ireland got a close win beating Pakistan by three wickets. Niall O’Brien was awarded player of the match for his match winning 72 runs with 2 catches. This was one of the biggest upsets of that time.

Kenya beat West Indies (1996 World Cup)

Whenever the list of greatest ODI World Cup upsets will be shared, this setback for West Indies will be included. Despite the presence of some greatest players, the two-time world champions lost to Kenya. West Indies was not able to chase a low total of 167 runs. West Indies was all-out just at the score of 93 at Pune, and Kenya got a comprehensive triumph by 73 runs.

Zimbabwe beat Australia (1983 World Cup)

Beating Australia had never been easy for any team, but Zimbabwe had done in the 1983 at Nottingham. In the 3^rd match of Prudential World Cup, Zimbabwe scored 239/6 in the 60 overs. Australia could not chase the target and scored 226/7 in 60 overs. Zimbabwe won by 13 runs. Duncan Fletcher was player of the match for his all-round performance. He remained not out on 69 off 84 with bowling figures 4/42.
