Dane Kaneria, a former Pakistan spinner, recently caught the attention of the cricket world with his candid comments on the prejudice he faced throughout his playing career, particularly from his former colleague Shahid Afridi.
Former Pakistan player Danish Kaneria made headlines after he made some bold allegations against Shahid Afridi.
Danish Kaneria criticism gained widespread attention when he posted a video of Afridi joyfully smashing a television after seeing his daughter performing a religious rite called 'Puja'. Kaneria expressed his dismay and asked if Afridi's behavior towards his own family was indicative of him caring for Kaneria on the cricket ground.
Dane Kaneria, who has taken more wickets than any other spinner in Pakistan cricket history, did not hold back. He said Afridi and other players tried to persuade him to convert to Islam, which he strongly refused. According to Kaneria, Inzamam-ul-Haq was the only captain who consistently supported him at that point. He said he had serious difficulties with his teammates because of his faith.
Kaneria urged people to think about how unfairly he would have treated him during their time in the national team if Afridi could react like that in front of his daughter.
“Shahid Afridi broke the television because his daughter was performing pooja. Imagine if he could do this to his innocent daughter, how would he have treated me,” Kaneria wrote on his official X handle.
Kaneria posted this tweet in light of his allegations against Afridi, in which he said he was treated poorly during his time in Pakistan.
For the uninitiated, Kaneria was only the second Hindu cricketer to play for Pakistan. During his international career, which spanned over a decade, Kaneria played 61 Tests and 18 ODIs. He picked up 261 wickets and 15 wickets in the two formats respectively. He was one of the better spinners of his era and picked up 15 five-wicket hauls during his time with Pakistan. His last international appearance came in a friendly against England at Trent Bridge in 2010. No other Pakistani spinner has more wickets in Test cricket than Kaneria. He also loved playing against India and took 43 wickets in 11 Tests against the Men in Blue.
