The incident took place in the round-10 Dhaka Premier League (DPL) match between Old DOHS Sports Club and Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club at BKSP-3, in which Sabbir Rahman was not part of any of the teams.
Legends of Rupganj, Sabbir's team, arrived at the venue during the morning match to play their game against Partex Sporting Club in the afternoon. During Old DOHS's innings, Sabbir threw a brick at Sheikh Jamal spinner Elias Sunny, who was fielding at deep square leg.
The incident then headed to Sabbir making racial abuse against Elias. This happened at a time when societies including cricketing communities are taking a stance against all sorts of discrimination.
After the match, Sheikh Jamal wrote to Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) seeking Sabbir's punishment over the case.
"With heavy disappointment, we inform you that, on June 16, 2021, during a match between Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Limited and Old DOHS Sports Club at the BKSP-3, Legends of Rupganj player Sabbir Rahman Rumman threw a brick at Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Limited player Elias Sunny outside from the ground without any reason," the letter read.
"He used abusive language in a racist manner saying, "Oi black, black, black Elias". Him being a professional cricketer, such behaviour is not only indecent but also punishable.
"In this situation, we request you to take disciplinary action against Sabbir Rahman."
In September 2018, Sabbir was banned for six months from international cricket for abusing a fan on social media. He did however went on to play the 2019 World Cup in
