Former India pacer and cricketing legend Zaheer Khan is reportedly in advanced negotiations with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for a mentor role ahead of the IPL 2025 season. Cricbuzz reports that if these talks materialize, Zaheer could replace key figures within the LSG setup, including Gautam Gambhir, who previously held a similar position.
Zaheer Khan, who has years of expertise as both a player and a coach, is being considered for a dual position in which he would mentor the LSG group while also working closely with the bowlers, offering crucial insights. His employment may see him operate as a critical link between the players and management, especially considering the franchise's owner's tremendous enthusiasm for the game.
This move comes after LSG decided to part ways with their former bowling coach, Morne Morkel, following the conclusion of the 2024 IPL season. Morkel, who joined the Indian team’s coaching staff, was a part of Gautam Gambhir's support team for the national side, taking on the role of bowling coach.
Zaheer Khan’s vast IPL experience includes stints with the Mumbai Indians, where he was a key figure in their coaching setup. He could potentially join Justin Langer's high-profile coaching team at LSG, where he would collaborate with Adam Voges, Lance Klusener, and Jonty Rhodes.
Zaheer, now 45, boasts an illustrious playing career with 92 Tests, 200 ODIs, and 17 T20Is for India, in addition to 100 IPL appearances for teams like Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Mumbai Indians. He last played in the IPL in 2017 and has since been active in various coaching and mentorship roles.
