Rajshahi is on the verge of making a long-awaited comeback to the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), with Valentine Group stepping forward to represent the historic city in the upcoming season. Rajshahi's absence from the BPL has been notable, with the franchise missing from action for the past three editions despite their strong legacy, including a runner-up finish in 2016 and a title win in the 2019-20 season.
In an official letter sent to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president, Faruque Ahmed, Valentine Group's Managing Director, Md. Shafiq Rahman, expressed the company's interest in securing the Rajshahi franchise for the 11th edition of the BPL. The group has committed to following the league's guidelines and quickly completing the required payment of BDT 1.5 crore to finalize the franchise acquisition process.
Though the BCB is determined to host the BPL starting December 27, political instability has raised concerns. Key figures in the BPL Governing Council, such as Chairman Sheikh Sohel and Secretary Ismail Haider Mallick, have remained inactive following recent governmental changes. Additionally, several existing franchise owners are currently out of the country, casting doubt on their future participation in the league.
In light of these developments, the upcoming season could see the inclusion of multiple new franchises, with Rajshahi poised to be one of them, as the BCB and BPL Governing Council work towards a revamped edition of the Bangladesh Premier League.
