After surpassing the great Chris Gayle, Nicholas Pooran is now the West Indies' top run-scorer in T20 international matches. At the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad, on Thursday, June 13, during the T20 World Cup 2024 Group C match against the West Indies, Pooran accomplished the enormous milestone.

Pooran began the game needing only three runs to overtake Gayle's record of 1,899 runs. He hit a boundary off Trent Boult's opening ball of the third over to reach this milestone. This hit not only propelled him over Gayle, but also cemented his place at the top of the West Indies' T20I run-scorers chart.

Pooran was unable to continue for very long, though, as Tim Southee claimed his wicket. Pooran gave up his wicket after attempting to attack the Kiwi bowling. With a short-pitched ball, Southee gave the batter a leg-side heave. Pooran scored 17 runs off 12 balls with 3 fours.

In 79 matches, Gayle amassed 1899 runs at an average of 27.92 and a strike rate of 137.50. His career total included two hundreds and fourteen half-centuries. He presently serves as one of the World Cup's ambassadors, along with Usain Bolt and Yuvraj Singh.

In the match, West Indies beat New Zealand by 13 runs on Thursday (13th June) to reach the Super Eight of ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024. Sherfane Rutherford's swashbuckling 68* off only 39 balls helped West Indies post 149 on the board after being reeling at 58-6. In reply, Alzarri Joseph and Gudakesh Motie ripped through Kiwi batting lineup to hand West Indies a brilliant 13-run victory.
