Chattogram test appears delicately poised making the third day a nervy day for both the team. On a spinner dominated day, two Of Chootogram Test 17 wickets tumbled. Panic-stricken
collapsing to 55/5 in the second innings led
by 133 runs with five-second innings wicket intact. By the look of it, seems day three will decide the fate of the match. Bangladesh may force a win if they can add another 50-60 runs. West Indies would win if they can limit Bangladesh below 100 and bat out of their skin in the second innings. Visitors may not be able chasing 200 against four-pronged Bangladeshi spinners if only Bangladesh can hold the catches.
Nayeem Hasan grabbed 5 for 61
The feature of day two was brilliant off-spin bowling of debuting teenager Naeem Hasan, becoming the youngest player in test history taking 5-wicket haul on debut. In the process, he eclipsed the record of
of
. Hetmeyer ( 63 ) and Dorwitch (63* ) also batted aggressively salvaging West Indies from 88/5 at one stage. Wickets are turning prodigiously and bouncing. Oddballs keeping low. But it does not look batsmen’s graveyard on any account. Batsman of either side appeared not possessing skill and technique, neither demonstrated temperament for staying at the wicket. Some ordinary stoke play accounted for at least 50 percent of the 17 wickets. The way this match has been played on day two it appeared players forgot that they were playing test and not T20 match. The wicket on day two did not have the demon justifying 17 wickets fall. It was inept batting, poor temperament and inappropriate skills of the batsmen of either team. Bangladesh started the day at 315/8. It did not take long for West Indies wrapping up the innings at 324. Left-arm spinner Warrican grabbed the last two wickets. 324 is not a huge test score. But as it turned out in the context of the match Bangladesh tail (Miraj, Taijul, and Naeem) wagging 89 runs made the difference. This may turn out one of the key element in the final outcome of the match. Taijul was aggressive in his unbeaten 39, debutant Naeem played everything with the middle of his bat in difficult circumstances. West Indies openers looking good for first 10 overs till Taijul with a sharp turning delivery trapped Powell plumb in front. Champion all-rounder Shakib came in at a crucial stage and struck double blows in his very first over removing Braithwaite and Hope. At 31/3 West Indies had back to the wall. Feeling the turn and bounce of wicket Shakib brought tall debutant teenage off-spinner Naeem in the attack. His record-breaking five wickets haul headlined Bangladesh domination over the visitors. The visitors were bowled out for 246, giving the home side a lead of 78 runs. The 17-year-old Nayeem beat Pat Cummins to become the youngest Test debutant to take a five-wicket haul, and the fourth youngest of all time to take a five-for. At 5/88 West Indies was looking down the barrel. A brave effort of Shimon Hetmeyer counter attacking Bangladesh threatened the take away the initiative from Bangladesh. Him andWicket Keeper Batsman Dorwich put together an aggressive 92 runs 6th wicket partnership. Mehidy Miraz removed Hetmeyer with a classic off-spinners delivery beating him in the flight.
Shakib celebrates a wicket on his return to Tests
The ball gripped, made him commit and giving a catch to the slip. He struck five fours and 4 sixes in his 47 balls 63.S Shane Dowrich, remained unbeaten after a fighting 63. He struck two fours and three sixes during his 101-ball stay. While all these were happening Shakib did not introduce himself possibly not risking his fingers too much. But when he returned had Shannon Gabriel caught at slip, as he moved to within one wicket of becoming the first Bangladeshi with 200 Test wickets. Earlier Nayeem Hasan grabbed three wickets following the tea break, removing Devendra Bishoo, Kemar Roach and Jomel Warrican, to add to his two wickets in the middle session. He is now the eighth Bangladesh player to take a five-wicket haul. West Indies Innings of 246 all out was much better than what it appeared to be heading at 88/5. Naeem took 5/61 and Shakib 3/43. Bangladesh second innings witnessed dramatic collapse in the face good accurate spin bowling of Warrican, Chase, and Bishoo.
, Soumya, Mominul, Shakib and Mithun threw away their wickets playing like novice on a turning track. Kayes attempted playing against the spin, Soumya played away from his body , Mominul went back instead of playing forward. Shakib unnecessarily counter attacked when discipline was the order of that stage . Mithun survived two DRS but could not last long. At stumps, Bangladesh was looking down the barrel at 55/5. Mushfiqur, Miraz, Mahmudullah and the tail would require adding another 60-70 runs at least comforting Bangladesh pressurizing visitors on this turning track. Chase (2/16 ) and Warrican (2/22) wrecked Bangladesh second innings. We have to conclude that Soumya and Kayes are not Test materials. They can neither play quality pace nor spin on spinning track. Hope Tamim will be back soon and Bangladesh would try a different option. We could not understand why Mushfique bats at number 6, Mithun and Shakib are not better technically equipped than him in trying circumstances. West Indies by no means is out of the game yet. But for them to make it easier they have to restrict Bangladesh second innings below 100. Chasing anything above 200 would be well-neigh impossible on this wicket. It will also depend on how Bangladeshi bowlers and fielders hold their nerves and how the fielders perform. It is going to be a thrilling third day at Chattogram. -Saleque Sufi
