In a significant move ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, the Mumbai Indians have appointed former Sri Lanka cricketer Mahela Jayawardene as their new head coach. This decision comes as part of a massive change to the coaching staff, with Jayawardene officially taking charge on October 13, 2024.

Jayawardene, who previously served as head coach from 2017 to 2021, returns to the franchise after a successful stint where he led the team to three IPL titles in 2017, 2019, and 2020. His reappointment marks a notable shift as he replaces Mark Boucher, who had taken over after Jayawardene's departure to assume the role of Global Head of Performance for the Mumbai Indians group.

While Boucher faced challenges during his tenure, many fans and analysts believe that Jayawardene’s tactical acumen and ability to maximize player potential will help elevate the team’s performance in the upcoming season.

In a media release, the MI owner expressed enthusiasm about Jayawardene’s return:
