India's Shubman Gill, Mohammed Shami, Virat Kohli, and New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell are in the race to become the best ODI cricketer in 2023. Indian opener Shubman Gill spent the last year like a dream. Gill scored 1584 runs in 29 matches at an average of 63.36. This is the fifth-highest run-scoring record by an Indian in ODIs. Only Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly are above Gill. Gill scored five centuries in 2023, and scored more than 100 runs in a strike. Throughout the year, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill have given great starts in opening for India. This pair was also brilliant in the World Cup.

Gill also scored a great double-century in 2023. He is the youngest cricketer to score a double century. Shubman Gill played an explosive innings of 208 runs off 149 balls in the match against New Zealand. No other Indian reached a fifty in that match. India won by 12 runs as they put up a huge collection of 349 runs. All in all, it was a golden year for Gill.

Another Indian Mohammed Shami was also in great form in 2023. This Indian pacer took 43 wickets in 19 matches. His performance in the World Cup has attracted attention. Mohammad Shami became the highest wicket-taker of the tournament by taking 24 wickets in 7 matches. Shami took 5 wickets 3 times in the World Cup, 1 time got 4 wickets. Another Indian Virat Kohli also had a great year in 2023. Kohli scored 1377 runs in 27 matches. Like Shami, he also shined in the home ODI World Cup. Kohli scored 765 runs in the World Cup after playing 11 matches, breaking Sachin Tendulkar's record of 673 runs in the 2003 World Cup. Kohli now holds the record for most runs by a batsman in a single World Cup.

Kohli's innings exceeded 50 in 9 out of 11 innings in the World Cup. In the tournament, Kohli scored runs at an average of 95.62, with a strike rate of 90.31. He hit 3 centuries including one in the semi-final against New Zealand. With that century, Kohli got his 50th ODI century, breaking Sachin's record of 49 centuries. Kohli now owns the most centuries in ODIs.

In 2023, Kohli scored 1377 runs in 24 matches at an average of 72.47. He hit 8 fifties with 6 centuries.

The only non-Indian cricketer on the list is New Zealand's Darryl Mitchell. Mitchell scored 1204 runs in 26 matches for the Kiwis in 2023. He also picked up 9 wickets at a part-time medium pace.

Mitchell was at the peak of form in ODIs in 2023. 1204 runs is the third-highest run in a single year by a New Zealand cricketer in this format. Mitchell started the year slowly and saved the best for the World Cup. Why New Zealand did not get Williamson for most of the World Cup, Mitchell did not let his absence be felt.

Mitchell scored 552 runs at an average of 69 in the World Cup, with a strike rate of more than 100. Scored 2 centuries, one of which was against one of the best bowling line-ups of the tournament like India. New Zealand eventually lost to India in the semi-finals, but Mitchell's brilliant performance caught everyone's attention.
