Bangladesh celebrates their first ever victory against Pakistan in the ICC Cricket World Cup 1999[/caption] This was Bangladesh's first World cup in 1999, where they had won against Associates Scotland in their third group game. After losing to Australia, the last game against Pakistan was a dead rubber, as Pakistan had already qualified for the Super Sixes. However, for Bangladesh, this match would be crucial in vindicating its claims for achieving the Test Status. Bangladesh were put into bat against the likes of Wasim Akram, Waqar Younus and Shoaib Aktar. The openers Mehrab Hossain Opi and Shahriar Hossain put on a good opening stand of 69. Shahriar scored an enterprising 39 and in the middle overs, a 66 ball 42 by Akram Khan kept the scoreboard ticking for Bangladesh. Saqlain Mushtaq, with a five-for, kept the batsmen in leash with his wickets. However, a late cameo of 27 by Khaled Mahmud Sujon took the Tigers to a competitive score of 223, but it did not seem enough against a batting line that had the likes of Saeed Anwar and Inzamam ul Haq. However, as Pakistan started their innings, things started to turn the other way. Khaled Mahmud Sujon, a little known slow medium bowler, started the carnage by picking up three top order batsmen. The rest of the bowlers chipped in, as none of the Pakistan batsmen crossed 30. They were ultimately bowled out for 162. After the final wicket fell, spectators, ecstatic with the historic victory for Bangladesh, flooded the ground. It was Bangladesh's first victory over a Test playing nation, and paved its way to get the Test Status a year later. However, Bangladesh has not won a match against Pakistan since then, despite coming agonisingly close in the last two Asia Cups. The Tigers have one more shot at Pakistan on 9 February, when the teams meet at Sydney for an official Warm up match before the World cup.
