Even though New Zealand have been knocked out from the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, it did not stop Lockie Ferguson from creating a mind blowing record.
The Kiwi pacer has become the second bowler in T20Is, and the first in a men's T20 World Cup, to bowl four maiden overs in a single spell.
On Monday, Lockie Ferguson delivered an extraordinary performance, finishing with remarkable figures of 4-4-0-3 against Papua New Guinea in New Zealand's final group-stage match of the T20 World Cup 2024. Despite his magical spell, which included four maiden overs, New Zealand's journey in the tournament ended there. They were knocked out following earlier losses to Afghanistan and the West Indies, making this match against Papua New Guinea their last in the competition. Ferguson's outstanding effort was a standout moment in an otherwise disappointing campaign for the team.
The only other bowler to achieve this feat is Canada's Saad Bin Zafar. In a T20 World Cup Americas Region Qualifier match held in Coolidge in 2021, Zafar finished with exceptional figures of 4-4-0-2 against Panama. This rare accomplishment places both Zafar and Ferguson in an elite category of bowlers who have managed to deliver four consecutive maiden overs in T20 International cricket. Ferguson's recent performance in the T20 World Cup 2024 against Papua New Guinea, alongside Zafar's earlier achievement, highlights the remarkable skill and control required to achieve such a milestone in the shortest format of the game.
