Sri Lanka Cricket has appointed the wicket-keeper batsman Kusal Perera as the new captain of the Sri Lankan ODI squad. Kusal Perera will face Bangladesh in Bangladesh as his first assignment with the new role in the national team.
Kusal Perera is filling the shoes of the left-handed batsman Dimuth Karunaratne after the latter had a poor run with the bat in the format. Sri Lanka Cricket took a crucial decision to drop some of the senior players from the ODI squad to build a stable team considering ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
Meanwhile, Kusal Perera's captaincy is also under the testing period at the moment, according to the chief selector of Sri Lanka Cricket. The chief selector, Pramodya Wickramasinghe recently talked about the reason behind Kusal Perera's appointment as the ODI skipper.
“First of all, a captain should earn his place in the playing XI. We looked at a few players and made several hypothetical teams according to different situations to see if that player can take his place in that team” he said. “Kusal is someone whom we thought qualifies in such circumstances, plus he is an experienced player with leadership exposure too.”
Also, he added that the main motive is to build a stable team for ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. He hinted that the board might look for another captain for the format if Kusal Perera was seen as unimpressive.
