Team India have 2 important assignments lined up ahead this year, namely Asia Cup 2023 and ICC ODI World Cup 2023. The Asia Cup will get underway from August 31 onwards and it comes to a close on September 17. On the other hand, the ICC ODI World Cup will begin on October 5 and it will end on November 19.
Kapil DevMeanwhile, the former Indian skipper reckons that it is important that every player should be tested out before playing in the World Cup tournament. While speaking to ABP News, Kapil Dev is disappointed by the fact that some players like KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer who were out of action for a long time didn't get a chance to engage in competitive cricket.
KL Rahul sustained a thigh injury during the IPL 2023 season while playing against Royal Challengers Bangalore and was subsequently ruled out of the tournament. On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer picked up a back injury during the Border Gavaskar Trophy series earlier this year and was ruled out of IPL 2023.
"Ideally, every player should be tested out. The World Cup is so close but you still haven't given the players a chance? What if they head to the World Cup and then get injured? The entire team will suffer. Here, at least they will get a chance to bat or bowl a little and get some rhythm going," Kapil Dev said.
The 1983 World Cup-winning skipper is also worried about the fact that in case the players get injured again during the World Cup, then the whole team will go through a tough phase.
"Worst case scenario, if the guys get injured again during the World Cup, it will be unfair to the players who will miss out on being part of the squad," he added. "The injured players who have returned need to be given a chance. If they are fit, then can play in the World Cup. There is no shortage of talent, but if they are not fit, India will have a chance to make changes to the World Cup squad right away," he added.
Team India last won the ICC ODI World Cup in 2011 under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Team India defeated Sri Lanka in the final to win their second ODI World Cup title.
