James Anderson has effectively ruled himself out of the Ireland Test to ensure his fitness for the upcoming Ashes.

The 40-year-old fast bowler disclosed that the groin strain he sustained last week while playing for Lancashire against Somerset was classified as a 'ten-day' injury. That's why he is so confident to feature in the Test against Ireland.

The next team on the schedule is Australia, so he doesn't need to risk overexerting himself for a Test against Ireland that doesn't count towards the World Test Championship.

Anderson is in the team to play Ireland on June 1, and he knows he won't be risked in the match since the Ashes will be 15 days later. Stuart Broad, Ollie Robinson, Matt Potts, and Chris Woakes are among the players aiming for playing time against Ireland in absence of Anderson.

“I think I will be fit for the game Ireland. Whether I play or not is probably another matter really. I definitely don’t want to risk it. I feel good, fine. I had a scan on the second day of the game. It was a little groin strain. It’s a 10-day recovery period, and I’m rehabbing already, running next week.

“It was the best result of a bad situation. I was disappointed to have to pull out of a game but with what’s to come in the summer, it was actually a pretty good result,” Anderson said.

After being out for all but seven overs during the 2019 home Ashes series due to a calf injury, Anderson is determined to play a major role this time around. “A little bit (more cautious). But that was a different, more serious injury. I ripped my calf earlier that summer, and it was a real push to try to get fit for that first Test. I don’t feel like this is anywhere near that severity. I am desperate to be fit for the first Ashes Test. If that means missing the Ireland Test, so be it,” he added.
