On Sunday, at Edgbaston in Birmingham, during the first Ashes Test, veteran English seamer James Anderson picked up his 1100th first-class wicket, adding another milestone to his career.

Anderson did this by dismissing Alex Carey when the wicket-keeper batter was comfortably positioned at 66. After starting the day on 311 for five at Edgbaston, Australia lost Khawaja and Alex Carey, two of their more established hitters, before losing three more wickets in rapid succession and finishing on 386, seven runs short of their objective. The 118 runs scored by Carey and Khawaja for the sixth wicket were vital.

For the most part of his innings, Khawaja displayed wonderful control, using his expertise to pick up singles while keeping the ship steady. However, Khawaja charged down the wicket as England skipper Ben Stokes aggressively fielded six catchers, only to have his off-stump uprooted by a yorker by Ollie Robinson.

Australia's captain, Pat Cummins, scored 38 runs, two of which came off sixes by spinner Moeen Ali, prompting Ali to leave the field for a few minutes to receive treatment for an injured finger.
