Colombo, July 21, 2024 : Jaffna Kings secured their fourth Lanka Premier League (LPL) title in a resounding fashion, thrashing the Galle Marvels by nine wickets at the R Premadasa Stadium on Sunday.
After winning the toss, the Jaffna Kings opted to field first, a decision that quickly paid dividends. Within 6.5 overs, they reduced the Galle Marvels to a precarious 24/3. Sri Lankan batsman Bhanuka Rajapaksa, who delivered an outstanding 82 runs off just 34 balls, mitigated Galle's early setbacks. Rajapaksa's explosive innings included eight fours and six sixes, forming two crucial partnerships along the way.
First, he shared a 62-run stand off 32 balls with Tim Seifert for the fourth wicket. Following this, he forged a crucial 72-run partnership off 30 balls with Sahan Arachchige for the fifth wicket, propelling Galle to a commendable total of 184/6 in their 20 overs.
Chasing a target of 185, the Jaffna Kings showcased their batting prowess despite an early setback with Pathum Nissanka being dismissed on the first ball. Kusal Mendis and Rilee Rossouw took charge, demolishing Galle's bowling attack with aggressive yet controlled batting.
Kusal Mendis, fresh off a century in Qualifier 2 against the Kandy Falcons, continued his excellent form with an unbeaten 72 off 40 balls. Rilee Rossouw perfectly complemented Kusal Mendis's innings, scoring a blistering century off 50 balls and remaining unbeaten on 106 off 53 balls. Rossouw's innings featured nine fours and seven sixes, ensuring Jaffna Kings reached their target in just 15.4 overs.
Galle's captain, Niroshan Dickwella, tried multiple bowling options but found no success. The only bowler to take a wicket in the final was South African Dwaine Pretorius.
