Visiting India crushed Sri Lanka by a walloping margin of 304 runs in the first Test of the three match Test series at the Galle International Stadium on Saturday. Setting aside a massive target of 550 runs to win in the fourth innings, Indian bowlers bundled Sri Lanka out scoring 245 runs in the fourth day of the match.
India thus took a 1 – 0 lead in the series. Sri Lanka was unfortunate to miss two of their batsmen to step down in the crease before accepting the huge defeat. They lost eight wickets but eventually considered all out as captain Rangana Herath and batsman Asela Gunaratne could not bat suffering from injuries.
Skipper Rangana Herath missed bowling in the second inning of India at day four after he was hit in the thumb during a fielding attempt on Friday. Asela Gunaratne also fractured his thumb.
It was, however, the biggest victory of India in an away Test match. The visitors threw an imposing first innings total of 600 runs powered by two destructive hundreds from Shikhar Dhawan and later Cheteshwar Pujara.
Dhawan missed the double hundred by 10 runs while Pujara continued his massive form with the bat scoring 153 runs.
In reply Sri Lanka made a petty first innings total of 291 runs. India did not force Sri Lanka to follow on and counted 240 runs more in their second innings.
