A total of 30 former South African cricketers came forward in support of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) and talked about their experiences with racism. Among all of them, the story of former fast bowler Makhaya Ntini has shocked the cricket world.
Ntini played in the era of gentlemen like Jacque Kallis, Shaun Pollock, Mark Boucher and under the captaincy of Graeme Smith. Despite playing under them, the fast bowler revealed that he used to feel lonely all the time as his tea-mates used to ignore him. He also revealed that the players didn't use to invite him for dinners.
"I was forever lonely. The first thing that comes to mind when I think of loneliness, is to not have someone knocking on your door and say, let's go for dinner. That's loneliness. You'd watch friends calling each other and then having plans right in front of you and then you'd be skipped. When you walk into a breakfast room - and you're the first one there - you'd see the next person that walks in, he will never come to sit next to you."
"It's that loneliness ... we're playing in the same team, practice at the same time, bowl to them, wear the same clothes and sing the same national anthem."
The fast bowler also thought that he would never reveal these stories as it would discourage the upcoming youngsters, but he couldn't hold on to himself when the BLM movement came right in front of him and felt it is the right time to speak up.
"It could never come at the right time. This is the right moment and the right time. We are still young. We are able to sit down with our own kids rather than wait until you are 65, when you tell your grandchildren," he concluded.
Ntini played 101 Tests, 173 ODIs and 10 T20Is for South Africa between 1998 and 2011.
