Former West Indies captain Carl Hooper has been appointed as assistant to new coach Daren Sammy as the Caribbean side prepare for their World Cup qualifiers.

Carl Hooper will join the West Indies as assistant coach ahead of an ODI series against the United Arab Emirates and their ICC Men's Cricket World Cup qualifier.

Former West Indies captain Carl Hooper will return as an assistant alongside white-ball head coach Daren Sammy for the three-game ODI series against the United Arab Emirates.

Hooper has coached and mentored at various levels in the Caribbean and Australia, having won 329 caps for the West Indies in more than 15 years.

Hooper, who previously coached briefly in the Caribbean and Australia, said it was an easy decision to join the West Indies. "When Daren first approached me about the potential opportunity, I immediately confirmed my interest as I genuinely want to help with the challenge and make a meaningful contribution," Hooper told ICC.

"I truly believe it is time for West Indies Cricket to step up and I am confident that my skills, knowledge and experience will help in that endeavor," he added.

Meanwhile, the West Indies are currently in Sharjah for the series against the United Arab Emirates which begins on Sunday 4 June at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. The second game will take place on Tuesday 6th June, the third and final game on Friday 9th June.

For the ICC World Cup Qualifiers, the West Indies have been drawn into Group A, where they meet hosts Zimbabwe, the United States, the Netherlands and Nepal in the preliminary round. The ten teams are battling for the two remaining places at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, to be held in India later this year.
