After Prithvi Shaw went unsold at the IPL 2025 mega auction, speculation has been rife over the reasons behind the young cricketer’s sharp decline. Former Delhi Capitals coach Pravin Amre recently shed light on Shaw’s struggles, suggesting that the distractions of money and fame played a major role in his downfall.

Shaw, once heralded as India’s next big batting sensation, burst onto the scene as captain of India’s Under-19 World Cup-winning team in 2018 and scored a Test century on debut. Experts, fans, and even ICC’s YouTube channel compared him to Sachin Tendulkar. However, Shaw’s journey soon took a downward spiral, with his performance dipping and his name notably absent from the recently concluded IPL 2025 auction.

Pravin Amre expressed disappointment over Shaw’s trajectory, attributing his decline to an inability to handle the glamour and wealth that came with the IPL. "It's so disappointing to see a talent like him going in the reverse direction... Even today, he can hit a 30-ball fifty in the IPL. Maybe he couldn't handle the glamour and money, the side-effects of the IPL," Amre said.

He further emphasized that talent alone isn't enough to sustain a successful career. "The three Ds – discipline, determination, and dedication – are important," he noted, adding that Shaw’s downfall could serve as a case study in Indian cricket.

Amre also drew parallels between Shaw and former Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli, who experienced a similar trajectory in his career. "Three years back, I gave him Vinod Kambli's example. I've seen Kambli's downfall from close quarters. It’s not easy to teach certain things to this generation," Amre said,

The former coach pointed out that Shaw’s financial success through the IPL may have contributed to his loss of focus. "Thanks to being retained by DC, Prithvi must have earned Rs 30-40 crore by the time he was 23. Will even an IIM graduate get that type of money? When you earn so much at such a young age, you tend to lose focus," Amre explained.

Despite Shaw’s current situation, Amre remains hopeful. "I hope he takes this IPL auction snub positively. It's an eye-opener for him. He's still got age on his side. He's just 25," he added, urging Shaw to use this setback as motivation for a potential comeback.
