England have axed Jason Roy, one of 2019's heroes, out of their final 15-man squad for next month's World Cup defense and named Harry Brook.
Jos Buttler will lead a 15-member World Cup squad in the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023 in India. The ECB announced its squad for the multi-team event on Sunday (September 17th).
Jason Roy was dropped of England's World Cup squad after recurring back spasms prevented him from playing in any of the last four one-day internationals against New Zealand, while Harry Brook - despite averaging just 12.33 in three innings in that series - was drafted in after him substitute.
While Brook has enjoyed a real international breakthrough in the last 18 months - he has played just six ODIs, the first of which was in January - Roy has been a mainstay of the England 50-overs team for over eight years. He has played 116 of his country's 139 ODIs since joining the team in 2015, but for the second time in just over a year he has lost his place in the England squad at the worst possible time: in the run-up to a World Cup.
However, due to a series of back spasms, he was unable to play in any of the four games. In his absence, Roy's rival for the opener's role, Dawid Malan, made a clear case for a starting role in the tournament, becoming player of the series with 277 runs at 92.33 in three games, including a match-winning century at Lord's.
Consequently, Malan and Jonny Bairstow will open the batting line-up for England when their tournament begins against New Zealand in Ahmedabad on October 5, with Brook - the notable omission from their original 15-man squad - preferred to Roy as the reserve batter.
Buttler tops the list of attacking batters alongside Jonny Bairstow, Harry Brook, Dawid Malan and Joe Root among others. The team has received reinforcements with the return of Ben Stokes, who has returned from his ODI break to take part in the World Cup.
Along with Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, David Willey, Chris Woakes and Liam Livingstone, he tops the list of entertaining all-rounders. Stokes recently scored 182 against the Kiwis to become England's highest individual runscorer in ODI cricket. It is noteworthy that Jason Roy made room for Harry Brook in the squad.
Mark Wood tops the list of their pacers along with Reece Topley, Willey and Woakes for the company. Adil Rashid and Gus Atkinson are also part of the team. Rashid is the company's specialist spinner along with Moeen Ali.
The big name missing is that of Jofra Archer, who was expected to make England's World Cup squad after he was recently spotted at England training in the New Zealand series. He is sidelined with a long-standing elbow injury and did not manage to get into the game.
