Earlier Australian national team former opener hinted at a possible retirement U-turn ahead of the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Warner has now issued a clarification, stating that he would only consider making a comeback if the Australian team management specifically requests it.

Warner, who retired from Test cricket earlier this year following Australia’s three-match series against Pakistan, reiterated that his return is not in his hands.

“My comment was only if my phone rang and they called me and if they asked. (In that case) you’re not going to say no. You’re not going to turn down a game for Australia,” Warner explained during his commentary debut on Fox Sports during the first ODI between Australia and Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

The Australian cricket icon also stepped away from white-ball cricket after the 2024 T20 World Cup, bringing an end to his illustrious international career across all formats. However, with the uncertainty around who will open alongside Usman Khawaja in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar series against India, Warner’s name has resurfaced in discussions.

Warner clarified that his recent remarks were misinterpreted, stating :

“I think a lot of it got taken out of context by some people, but it is what it is. If I was to get a call, why wouldn’t I say yes?”

Australia’s five-match Test series against India is set to kick off on November 22 in Perth, followed by Tests in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney. This highly anticipated series is expected to be a fierce contest, with both teams aiming for dominance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
