Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has retained Najmul Hossain Shanto as captain for the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan, ending speculation about his potential resignation from the role. The decision came following a meeting between Shanto and BCB president Faruque Ahmed, and the squad announcement swiftly followed. While Shanto’s recent comments about stepping down have sparked significant discussion within Bangladesh cricket, chief Selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu clarified that the decision rests solely with the BCB.

“It’s the board’s decision to keep Shanto as captain. As selectors, it’s not our place to comment,” Lipu stated when asked about the captaincy choice. “He was the captain, and he remains so for the series.”

One notable addition to the squad is left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed, making his return after over a year. Nasum last represented Bangladesh in October 2022 at the ODI World Cup in India. Lipu explained, “Nasum was part of the World Cup squad, and Bangladesh have played few ODIs since. With Shakib [Al Hasan] not in the squad, we’re considering our left-arm spin options, focusing on Tanvir [Islam] and Nasum as our main choices.”

Lipu emphasized Nasum’s selection as part of the team’s combination strategy, saying, “Nasum has been working hard, and his inclusion offers an option if the conditions favor three spinners. Alongside [Mehidy Hasan] Miraz and Rishad [Hossain], Nasum might get an opportunity.”

Fast bowler Nahid Rana has also earned a spot, filling the gap created by Tanzim Hasan Sakib's injury and Hasan Mahmud’s workload management. Lipu elaborated, “We’re managing Hasan’s workload and want to test Nahid Rana. Before the Champions Trophy, we have this series and games in the West Indies. We haven’t seen Rana in ODIs, so we’ll be assessing him closely. His pace could be a valuable asset, and our new coach will also get a chance to evaluate him.”
