England star all-rounder Ben Stokes is willing to reverse his one-day international retirement in order to aid England's World Cup defence in India this year, according to The Telegraph.

England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will announce their provisional squad for the upcoming edition of ODI World Cup 2023 tomorrow.

Stokes announced retirement from ODI cricket 13 months ago. He decided to focus only on Tests and T20s. The all-rounder played a major role in England’s title win in the 2019 ODI World Cup and 2022 T20 World Cup.

A few days ago, England head coach Matthew Mott revealed that England’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler would talk with England Test captain Ben Stokes to come out of retirement to participate in the ODI World Cup this year. And now it looks like Buttler has convinced Stokes very well.

“Jos will probably lead the way on that communication, but Ben’s pretty straight with all of us. We will see if he’s keen. There has not been a clear direction on what he’s going to do yet, but we are still hopeful. I’ve always said his bowling would be a bonus, but just look at what he brings with the bat, even in the field,” Mott told Daily Mail.

“Watching him throughout the whole Ashes series, he had such a great presence. He’s done it for years when it comes to performing in one-day cricket and so he’s an invaluable commodity,” he added.

While concerns remain about Stokes' knee, which may require surgery at some point, Telegraph has learned that he would be willing to miss next season's IPL if he requires a break to recover.

On the other hand, England are also willing to take risk on pacer Jofra Archer’s fitness as they are ready to pick him for the upcoming World Cup.
