The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has expressed disappointment with the trip during the upcoming 2023 Asian Cup. The governing body director mentioned that this will have an impact on performance as it is mentally stressful.

The upcoming Asia Cup will be hosted jointly by Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Four games will be held in Pakistan, while nine games, including the summit, will be hosted in Sri Lanka. The tournament serves as a dress rehearsal ahead of the ODI World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in India in October and November.

The Chairman of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Cricket Operations, Jalal Yunus, has expressed concern that the excessive travel entailed by the hybrid Asia Cup model could take its toll on players.

Bangladesh will open the tournament against Sri Lanka on August 31 and then travel to Pakistan to play Afghanistan on September 3. If they qualify for the Super 4 it will be even harder for them as they will face hectic travel.

If they qualify, Bangladesh will play their first Super Four game in Pakistan and then have to return to Sri Lanka to play the remaining two Super Four games. The final of the tournament is also scheduled to take place in Sri Lanka and if they qualify they will have to move there as well.

Speaking about the hectic schedule, Jalal Yunus, chairman of BCB cricket operation, revealed that the Asian Cricket Council arranged flights for them as it is their responsibility to make good arrangements. Speaking to reporters he said.

“Yes, we have to go to Lahore to play the first game. In the first round there are two games, one in Sri Lanka and the other in Pakistan. We have to go, because there's really nothing we can do. After [August] 31st, the next game will be on [September] 3rd.

“In order to make the journey more comfortable, the Asia Cup [ACC] authorities have decided to use charter flights to travel the teams. We travel on charter planes. This is the responsibility of the Asian Cricket Council. Of course we want to travel with a first class airline. If that is a national airline or a charter plane then that would definitely be good for everyone.”

When you travel, it will surely have an impact: Jalal Yunus

Jalal Yunus, who replaced Akram Khan as cricket operations chairman in 2021, said air travel and reaching airports two hours before departures could put players under mental strain. However, he also acknowledged that Bangladesh also need to prepare as other teams agree with the schedule.

"If you travel there will definitely be an impact that I feel because if you travel by plane you have to go two hours early and carry your luggage and preparing all these things is mentally exhausting. Pakistan is far away from Sri Lanka. So there is nothing to do as it is ACC's decision, everyone plays like this. We have to accept it too,” he concluded.

BCB are expected to announce a provisional squad soon as a pre-season camp for the upcoming Asian Cup will be held from July 31.
