It was India's day in the first day of the third Test against England at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. Axar, Rohit hand India domination in D/N Test

The renovated 110,000-seated ground hosted the second-ever pink-ball Test in India. Opting to bat first, England slid from 74/2 to 112 allout, their second lowest Test total in India. The visitors batted 48.4 overs, leaving almost half day's play for Indian batsmen. Rohit Sharma, coming into this match with a hundred in Chennai, was sublime as he hit his 12th Test fifty - unbeaten 57 runs off 82 balls with 9 fours. His captain Virat Kohli, 27 off 58, left in the last over of the day. India are 99/3 at stumps. Jack Leach took crucial wickets of Cheteshwar Pujara for a duck and Kohli while Jofra Archer brought the breakthrough with the wicket of Shubman Gill, who played 51 balls for 11 runs as he got off the mark on the 27th ball he faced. It was Axar Patel's day as he bagged his second five-for in as many Tests. His left-arm spin brought 6 wickets for 38 runs, which is the second-best figures by a spinner in D/N Test matches. Ravichandran Ashwin took 3 for 26. Earlier in the day Ishant Sharma had the perfect start in his 100th Test, sending Dom Sibley for a duck. No.3 Jonny Bairstow also failed to open his account, getting trapped lbw off Axar. England lost their captain Joe Root (17) and Zak Crawley before the tea break, after which a collapse was brought about. Crawley remained the top-scorer with 10-four studded 53 runs off 84 balls.
