Australian umpire Gerard Abood wears helmet for the first time in a T20 match ever.[/caption]
"He has been using the helmet in T20 matches. He did so in the Big Bash Leagues and did so in T-20i before also but is the first umpire wearing helmet in T20I", John Ward, the other Australian umpire, who has been wearing helmet in the ODIs", said exclusively.
"It is true that me and Abood are the first umpires wearing helmets in ODIs and T20 Internationals respectively".
"It is a batsman helmet. There is no specific umpire helmet sadly", Ward adds.
Karl Wentzel was the world's first Australian umpire to have a helmet on field.
"He (Karl) worn one well before Gerard Abood and myself in club cricket", Ward added further.
Interestingly, another Australian and ICC Elite Panel umpire Bruce Oxenford has opted for a custom made Bulletproof "Ox Block" which is made of polycarbonate plastic that can withstand sledgehammer blow.
Why only Australian umpires have taken this initiative? "Maybe they gear getting seriously injured...We value health and safety though", Ward signed off.
"It is because we are more cautious but the days will come when other umpires start wearing helmet soon", Karl Wentzel, speaking exclusively added.
