The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2025 has reached its final stages, with the league phase concluding and only the playoffs and final remaining. While the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had promised a smoothly run tournament, controversies surrounding player payments, match-fixing allegations, and franchise disputes have cast a shadow over the event.

From the very beginning, the Durbar Rajshahi franchise has been at the center of controversy. Issues regarding unpaid salaries led players to boycott practice sessions, while foreign players even refused to play matches due to financial disputes. Match-fixing allegations have also emerged, prompting the National Sports Council (NSC) to launch an investigation committee.
Now, the interim government's Youth and Sports Advisor, Asif Mahmud, has vowed to take legal action against the franchise if outstanding payments are not cleared.
Speaking to the media today, Asif Mahmud stated, "There were several coordination issues in this year’s BPL. The NSC has formed an investigative committee to identify the mistakes. We had a lot to learn from this season, and we hope to do better in the future."
Regarding Rajshahi’s financial disputes, he warned, "We spoke to the franchise owner today. He assured us that all pending payments will be cleared. If they fail to do so, we will have no choice but to take legal action. I have made it clear that failure to pay will result in legal consequences."
Apart from Rajshahi, Chittagong Kings owner Samir Kader Chowdhury has also been caught in controversy. His comments about withholding player payments, specifically concerning cricketer Parvez Hossain Emon, sparked outrage. The Daily Star reported his remarks, which led to a formal warning from the authorities.
Expressing his disappointment, Asif Mahmud instructed the BCB to take action, "This is highly disappointing. He has no right to make such statements about a player. He signed the cricketer through a contract. I have instructed the BCB to take necessary action according to regulations."
While BPL 2025 has seen some thrilling matches, off-field controversies have dominated discussions. With legal action looming against franchises and investigations into match-fixing allegations, the tournament’s reputation has taken a hit. As the playoffs approach, it remains to be seen whether the BCB and the authorities can restore order and credibility to the country’s premier T20 competition.
