Australia coach Andrew McDonald will travel home after the ODI World Cup to rest and prepare for the Test summer. Assistant coach Andre Borovec will take charge of the senior team for the first time in the five-match T20I series against India starting next Thursday in Visakhapatnam.
Australia will extend its stay in India after the World Cup to take part in a T20I series against the Indian team. The series begins on November 23 in Visakhapatnam, followed by games in Thiruvananthapuram, Guwahati, Nagpur and Hyderabad.
Andrew McDonald will return home after the ODI World Cup to rest and prepare for the Test season. McDonald had earlier taken a break during the T20I series against South Africa. Assistant coach Michael Di Venuto took over coaching responsibility in South Africa.
It is interesting to note that 45 year old Borovec coached McDonald with a club called Geelong in Victorian cricket. The former joined the Australian coaching team for the first time in 2021 for the white-ball tours to the Caribbean and Bangladesh. He also toured with Australia on the 2022 Pakistan tour. However, when McDonald took over as head coach in May 2022, he was added as a full-time assistant coach.
Australia gave senior players, including Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, a rest for the T20I series against India. Matthew Wade will captain the team in this series. The squad particularly includes experienced players, including David Warner and Steve Smith.
Tim David, Sean Abbott, Josh Inglis, Jason Behrendorff and Nathan Ellis have been included in the T20I squad. Matt Short, Spencer Johnson and Tanveer Sangha have retained their places in the shorter format. However, Ashton Agar will miss the series due to injury.
The Australian coaching team will not be thinking about the India series at the moment. They are in the semi-finals for the ninth time and will face South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Thursday, November 16.
The Men in Yellow have won five ODI World Cups so far, while no other team has won more than two titles. The Pat Cummins-led side is on a seven-game winning streak and has all the ingredients to go the distance.
