Former India batter Aakash Chopra believes that New Zealand have successfully exacted their revenge on England for the heart-breaking defeat they suffered in the final of the 2019 ODI World Cup with their overwhelming performance in the opening match of the 2023 ODI World Cup.
The Three Lions appeared to be in total and utter disarray on Thursday, October 6, as the New Zealand cricket team chased down a target of 283 with as many as 82 balls left in their innings. The English team got off to a good start when Sam Curran took the wicket of Will Young. However, from that point on, Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra put up an undefeated partnership for the second wicket of 273 runs, which ultimately led to the Black Caps crossing the finish line first.
Aakash Chopra praised New Zealand's performance against England on his YouTube channel. "It looked like New Zealand took revenge for the 2019 World Cup final loss. I mean, they completely dominated the opposition. England started as one of the favorites, but New Zealand made them look so ordinary,” he said.
Chopra also said that England tried to play attacking cricket but they didn’t succeed at all. “What are you doing, England? It looked like they expected their reputation to do all the work. They wanted to play aggressive cricket, but it did not transpire on the ground at all. I saw so many poor shots towards the end, take Joe Root's and Moeen Ali's dismissal as example,” he added.
