Former fast bowler Zaheer Khan believes Rohit Sharma could lead Team India in the upcoming T20 World Cup. The next edition of the T20 World Cup is scheduled to be held in the Caribbean and the United States of America next year.
India's 2023 Cricket World Cup heartbreak has not fully healed yet as players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have not made a public appearance since the final loss to Australia. However, the Indian cricket team has moved on and is already gearing up for the 2024 T20 World Cup, with Suryakumar Yadav leading a young brigade in a 5-match campaign against Australia.
When it comes to next year's T20 World Cup, talks over India's captaincy choice are already in full swing, with Hardik Pandya emerging as the leading candidate. However, former India pacer Zaheer Khan feels that the team management would prefer Rohit Sharma when choosing the captain for the main event.
The BCCI is yet to provide a concrete update on Rohit Sharma's future in T20Is. According to multiple reports, the BCCI has left the decision to the star batsman himself. The doors of the T20I team are still open to the ODI and Test captain and his participation in the T2o World Cup will depend on his decision.
As of 2021, a total of 9 players lead Team India in T20Is. While Rohit Sharma led the team in 32 matches, Hardik Pandya captained the team in 16 matches. Virat Kohli led the team in 10 matches followed by Rishabh Pant who led in 5 matches. Shikhar Dhawan and Ruturaj Gaikwad led Team India in three games each while Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav took charge in two games. KL Rahul also led the team in one match.
Although Rohit last played a T20I match in the semi-final of the ICC T20 World Cup in November 2022, questions have arisen over his future in T20Is, especially since Hardik Pandya has led the side in the shortest format during Rohit's absence. Zaheer admitted that the decision for the T20 World Cup captaincy position could be a choice between current captain Rohit and Pandya.
“There is a big tournament like the IPL in between which gives them enough time to prepare. So it will either be Rohit Sharma or, depending on how Hardik approaches his rehab, his comeback,” concluded the Shrirampur-born cricketer.
