The term 'wickets' could be replaced by 'outs' in the new The Hundred cricket format, which is slated to begin in July. While the women's tournament begin on July 21, the men's one will start on the following day. The Hundred, a brand new 100-ball franchise cricket competition, was delayed by a year because of the coronavirus pandemic. According to reports, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is discussing the idea to rename 'wickets' as 'outs' as "one of the ways to potentially make cricket more accessible to newcomers". "The Hundred is designed to make cricket accessible to everyone, and research shows that the language of the game can sometimes be a barrier," said a spokesperson for the tournament. "Along with our broadcast partners, we want The Hundred to open cricket up to more people, as well as entertaining existing fans, so we're discussing the clearest ways of explaining the game, but nothing's been finalised," he further added. The key phrases within The Hundred are likely to be runs, balls and outs, and commentators shall be inspired slightly than ordered to make use of new phrases. Another key change will be batsmen being described as batters in the men's format in a bid to make the term gender impartial. The term 'third man' may additionally be axed as well.
