Sri Lanka has been hit with a major injury setback ahead of their second Test against New Zealand, as experienced pacer Vishwa Fernando has been sidelined due to a hamstring injury. The 33-year-old reported discomfort in his right hamstring during practice, leading to his withdrawal from the squad. Fernando has since been sent to the High Performance Center for rehabilitation.
In response, Sri Lanka has called up uncapped off-spinner Nishan Peiris to replace Fernando. Peiris, who has been part of the national team squad before, is now set to join the team ahead of the second Test match, which will take place at the Galle International Stadium starting Thursday, September 26.
The 27-year-old Nishan Peiris has been part of the Sri Lanka squad in the past, including for their tour of Bangladesh, but has yet to earn his debut cap. With 41 first-class matches under his belt, Peiris brings a wealth of domestic experience, having taken 172 wickets at an average of 24.37 and a strike rate of 42.60. His impressive record also includes 12 five-wicket hauls, with best bowling figures of 8/94 in an inning.
In List A cricket, Peiris has played 61 matches, claiming 86 wickets, while in T20s, he has picked up 43 wickets in 39 games.
Despite his impressive domestic record, Peiris might face competition for a spot in the playing XI, especially given the presence of all-rounders like Mendis. However, being part of the squad will provide him with valuable experience in a high-stakes series.
