The fallout from Pakistan's disappointing T20 World Cup campaign has led to the first casualties, with Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq being dismissed as selectors for the national team. Razzaq, who was recently appointed to the selection committee for both the men's and women's teams, will no longer serve as a selector for the women's team either. Wahab's position was at risk following Pakistan's exit from the T20 World Cup during the group stage. Although he was removed as chief selector earlier this year and later appointed as one of seven selectors on a committee without a chief, Wahab was perceived as the de facto head of the committee. This perception caused him frustration, as he bore the brunt of criticism for the committee's decisions.

The selection committee is likely to be restructured, with a chief selector eventually being reappointed. The panel's size is expected to be reduced, making it unlikely that Wahab and Razzaq will be replaced to maintain the current number of members.

Wahab's departure marks a rapid fall from grace for a man once seen as very close to PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi. Wahab had served as caretaker sports minister in Naqvi's cabinet while Naqvi was the caretaker chief minister of Punjab. He followed Naqvi to the PCB, where he was initially appointed as chief selector. Wahab also accompanied the Pakistan team to the T20 World Cup as the senior team manager, a role he is now likely to lose as well. Naqvi, for his part, wanted to show that no one was immune from the consequences of failure.

This decision represents another U-turn by the PCB regarding the selection process for the Pakistan national team. The seven-member committee, announced less than four months ago, saw Wahab demoted from chief selector, with each member having an equal vote. At that time, Naqvi stated that the committee would "make a majority decision based on debate and argument to reach a satisfactory conclusion." This move also highlights the ongoing instability within the selection committee in recent years.

The PCB has had six chief selectors in the past four years, including Wahab, Haroon Rashid, Shahid Afridi, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Wasim, and Misbah-ul-Haq, each serving brief terms.

The remaining five members of the selection committee are the head coach and captain of the respective formats, along with Mohammad Yousuf, Asad Shafiq, and Bilal Afzal, a data analyst.
