Jammu and Kashmir pacer Umran Malik, who shot to fame with his express pace in the IPL, is set to miss the upcoming Buchi Babu Invitational tournament due to health concerns. The 24-year-old speedster, who has been out of the spotlight since his impressive performances in IPL 2022, is recovering from dengue and will not be able to participate in the first leg of the domestic season.

Malik, who was once a standout for Sunrisers Hyderabad with his consistent 140 kph deliveries, has faced a series of setbacks, including a hamstring injury and a disappointing IPL 2024 season. Despite his efforts to make a comeback, his plans have been derailed by illness.

"I would have loved to play in the [Buchi Babu Invitational] tournament, but I’m just recovering from dengue," Malik told The Indian Express. The pacer had been preparing for a strong showing in the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 season but was hampered by weather disruptions and injuries.

The Buchi Babu Invitational Cricket Tournament, scheduled to start on August 15 across Tamil Nadu, will feature 12 teams, including defending champions Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Railways, Gujarat, Mumbai, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Chhattisgarh, Hyderabad, Baroda, and two local teams, TNCA President's XI and TNCA XI. Malik's absence from the Jammu & Kashmir squad has raised concerns among fans and selectors, as he was expected to use this tournament as a springboard for his return to form.

Despite the setbacks, Malik remains optimistic about his future in cricket. "I’ve definitely become a better bowler if you ask me. After the IPL, I injured my hamstring, and just as I recovered, I’m down with dengue. But I’m looking forward to the domestic season and especially the Duleep Trophy," he added.

Malik last played for India in July 2023 against the West Indies. As he continues his recovery, the pacer is keen to make a strong comeback and regain his place in the national team. His next target is the Duleep Trophy, where he hopes to showcase his improved skills and fitness.
