The long-standing demand for reform within the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) from fans, supporters, and several cricketers is finally gaining traction. For over a decade, such changes were scarcely seen. However, the recent nationwide movement driven by student and public protests has also influenced the BCB, signaling the start of a new era. Asif Mahmud, the Youth and Sports advisor, has stated that this is just the beginning.

The student-led movement has brought about significant changes across the country, and the BCB is no exception. On August 21, Nazmul Hassan Papon, who held the BCB presidency for more than 12 years, officially resigned. Alongside him, Cricket Operations Chairman Jalal Yunus also stepped down. There are even indications that head coach Chandika Hathurusingha may no longer continue in his role.

Following Papon’s resignation, former national cricketer Faruque Ahmed has been appointed as the new BCB President, marking the first time a former international player has taken this position in the board's history. Faruque had previously served as a selector for the BCB.

In another significant move, former BKSP coach Nazmul Abedeen Fahim, a well-respected figure in the cricketing community, has been appointed as a new director of the BCB, heading the Game Development department. His appointment fulfills a long-standing wish of cricket enthusiasts to see Fahim involved in the board’s operations.

However, the reforms in the BCB are far from over. Youth and Sports Advisor Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan hinted at further changes, posting on Facebook on Wednesday night, "The reform of the BCB has only just begun."

For years, there have been allegations of political influence at various levels within the BCB, from district teams to national selections that often operate behind closed doors. Former captain Khaled Mashud Pilot recently echoed these concerns on BDCricTime, confirming the pervasive impact of political considerations and nepotism in forming district-level teams. He also raised issues surrounding the manipulation of players' ages in age-group cricket, biased umpiring, and the questionable management of tournaments. Additionally, there are concerns regarding the ownership of several clubs.

Advisor Asif’s recent remarks suggest that the ongoing reforms may eventually address these longstanding issues.
