Rahmanullah Gurbaz was born on November 28, 2001 in Afghanistan. Gurbaz was born into a middle-class family with no athletic background. Hence, he struggled to play cricket in his early life. He also worked at a construction site to buy cricket equipment.

Gurbaz was first played cricket for the Khost Provincial Team to compete in a one-day Class 1 tournament in Kabul. His performances with the racquet and behind the stumps for the Khost team provided him with an opportunity to play for the Afghanistan U19 team.

Gurbaz made his List A debut for Afghanistan A against Zimbabwe A during their tour to Zimbabwe on January 27, 2017.
