India thrashed Afghanistan by 47 runs on Friday (21st June) at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados. Suryakumar Yadav's blistering 53 and then a cameo from Hardik Pandya helped India post a massive 181 on the board. In reply, Jasprit Bumrah's yet another masterclass with the ball knell down Afghan batting lineup and handed India a thumping 47 run victory.
A crushing victory over Afghanistan gave India a solid boost up to start Super-Eight journey.
Opting to bat first, the opening pair of captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli struggled to get going in the powerplay. Rohit fell to Fazalhaq Farooqi on 8 off 13, while Kohli consumed 24 balls to get 24.
After the departure of openers, Rishabh Pant, Suryakumar Yadav came to the show and started teeing off the Afghan bowlers. Surya, in particular, was superb with his sweep shots which put the pressure back on the bowlers and didn’t allow them to get settled. He brought up a fifty before Hardik came to give a floater to the innings.
Surya scored a blitzkrieg 53 off 28 balls, while Hardik made 32 off 24 balls and India posted a massive 181 on the board on a tough deck.
In reply, Afghanistan crumbled infront of a lethal Indian attack. Jasprit Bumrah removed Gurbaz earlier on to set the tone, and then he continued his great form as he picked up Zazai. While Axar Patel bowled some tight overs to put Afghanistan under immense pressure.
Gulbadin Naib and Azmatullah Omarzai stitched a partnership and tried to salvage the situation but Naib's departure saw Afghanistan falling into abyssal.
Afghanistan are 47 runs shorts and their NRR will be dented heavily as well as their Semi-final qualification chances.
