Sri Lanka is set to face India in an exciting three-match T20I series starting on July 27, with Charith Asalanka stepping in as the new captain. Asalanka takes over from Wanindu Hasaranga, who recently resigned from the role. This decision, along with the 16-member squad, has received approval from Sri Lankan Sports Minister Harin Fernando.
The Sri Lankan squad for the T20I series is a well-balanced mix of young talent and seasoned campaigners. Experienced players like Dinesh Chandimal and Chamindu Wickremesinghe are expected to provide stability and guidance. Meanwhile, dynamic batsmen Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Janith Perera, known for their explosive starts, will aim to set a strong foundation at the top of the order.
Kamindu Mendis and Dasun Shanaka add considerable depth to the middle order, ensuring the team has the resilience to handle different match situations. Wanindu Hasaranga, despite stepping down as captain, remains a key player, offering a potent spin option that will be crucial against India's formidable batting lineup.
In a media release, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) stated: “The Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee selected the below-given 16-member squad to play in the T20I series during the India Tour of Sri Lanka 2024. The Honorable Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Harin Fernando, approved the squad. The T20I games will be played on the 27th, 28th, and 30th July at the PICS, Pallekele.”
