In reply to Sri Lanka's 396 after electing to bat first, South Africa have ended day two at 317/4 in 72 overs. The scoring rate stays over four runs per over. The Proteas are going at 4.40 while Sri Lanka had their run rate 4.12 in 96 overs. Having being at 340/6 on day one, debutant Lutho Sipamla ran through the Lankan batting line-up, picking up the wickets of Kasun Rajitha, Vishwa Fernando and Lahiru Kumara in quick succession to end the innings. Dasun Shanaka remained stranded on 87-ball 66* runs, hitting three fours and five sixes. Openers Dean Elgar and Aiden Markram made a commanding start to South Africa's innings, putting on a stand of 141 runs. Markram departed scoring 98-ball 64 runs with 14 boundaries. One down batsman Rassie van der Dussen failed with the bat as he made 15 while Elgar was marching towards a 13th Test ton but he played a false stroke straight back to Shanaka being five runs shy. Elgar played 130 balls for his 95 runs that included 16 fours. New Test captain Quinton de Kock (18 off 11), who came at No.5, turned Wanidu Hasaranga's first Test wicket. Former skipper Faf du Plessis and Temba Bavuma have ended the day on a high, being on 55* and 41* runs respectively. Sri Lanka had Dhananjaya retired hurt on 79 runs on the first day. The touring side's concerns deepened as pacer Rajitha left the field with a groin strain after bowling only 2.1 overs.
