South Africa have just confirmed direct play in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Proteas was confirmed to play in the World Cup as the first match of the ongoing Ireland-Bangladesh ODI series was washed away by rain. Soon after, South Africa appointed Gwavu as the fielding coach for limited-overs cricket.
"He brings a wealth of experience at the highest level in South African cricket with a coaching career that speaks volumes. With the fine margins and the ever-increasing stakes in 50-over and T20 cricket, fielding has become a critical part of any successful team and we strongly believe Wandile's expertise will help the Proteas maintain their strong tradition of fielding excellence across both formats,” Enoch Nkwe, South Africa's director of cricket said.
Gwavu’s coaching career is quite rich. He has coached South African domestic cricket for a long time. He coached the Johannesburg-based Lions team for four seasons and won five titles for that team. Besides, he also coached Joburg Super Kings, a South African Franchise League SA20 team.
Gwavu has been replaced by former Proteas fielding coach Justin Ontong. Ontong was part of former head coach Mark Boucher's coaching panel. But currently, Boucher has left the responsibility of the national team and signed his name in franchise cricket. And Ontong is also expected to return to domestic cricket in Africa. Paarl and the Lions are on the hunt for a new head coach. They are going to hire a new coach before the new season.
Gwavu's first duty will be the white-ball series against Australia starting on August 30. Proteas will play 3 T20Is and 5 ODIs against Australia in that series.
