19-year-old leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha has become only the second person of Indian origin to be selected in Australian cricket team. Earlier Gurinder Sandhu, six years ago, had become the first person of Indian origin to be selected in Australia’s senior cricket team. The right-arm pacer had made his debut in 2015 against India in Melbourne in an ODI match. Tanveer, son of an Indian-origin taxi driver in Australia, has been called upto the Australia’s 18-member squad for the T20 International series against New Zealand in February. The leg-spinner's father Joga, who hails from Rahimpur, a village 20km from Jalandhar, moved to Australia in 1997, and became a Taxi driver in Sydney. His mother works as an accountant. Tanveer is one of the three uncapped players picked for the five-match T20I series in New Zealand. Earlier he made a name for himself in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup last year in South Africa, as well as the Big Bash League (BBL). Playing for Sydney Thunder in the BBL 10, he scalped 21 wickets at an impressive average of 16.66. Before that, he was Australia's leading wicket taker in the Under-19 World Cup last year, picking up 15 wickets in the six matches. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting had also advocated for Sangha's inclusion in the Australian team. "He's a young bloke who looks like he's pretty confident and in control of what he's doing, and he bowls proper good balls so he might be someone they'd look to get into the system," Ponting had said.

The five-match T20I series between Australia and New Zealand will roll onto the ground from February 22.
