Simon Harmer has been called up to the South Africa Test squad after last playing for South Africa in India 2015. The off-spinner has found a spot in the 17-man squad for the two-Test tour of New Zealand as a replacement for Keshav Maharaj, and in place of George Linde, who was not available for selection due to his imminent marriage.

There's also a recall for Seam bowler Lutho Sipamla, who missed tours to the West Indies and the series against India at home. Sipamla joins a seamed six-man contingent led by Kagiso Rabada, who was rested by the ODI squad against India, and also includes Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, Glenton Stuurman, another Kolpak returnee Duanne Olivier and all-rounder Wiaan Mulder. Sisanda Magala, who was in the Test squad for the India series, was left out.

Harmer signed a Kolpak deal with Essex in 2017 and impressed at the English County circuit, where he played a crucial hand in his team's three title wins in four seasons. In 2019 he finished the championship as the top wicket-taker and led his team to victory in the T20 Blast.

"The addition of Simon (Harmer) and Lutho (Sipamla) reinforces our intentions as a body to reward excellence on the field and the pair have let their work speak for itself over the past season," said Victor Mpitsang, CSA Convenor of selectors.

Although Harmer has not played Test cricket in six and a half years, he has now been rewarded for his rich form at the home circuit - a tally of 27 wickets in eight innings for the Titans this season, averaging 29.40, second only Duanne Olivier, who has 28 wickets to his name.

South Africa departs for New Zealand on February 2 and will undergo a 10-day mandatory quarantine before being allowed to train.

South Africa squad for New Zealand tour: Dean Elgar (capt), Temba Bavuma, Sarel Erwee, Simon Harmer, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Lungi Ngidi, Duanne Olivier, Keegan Petersen, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Lutho Sipamla, Glenton Stuurman, Rassie van der Dussen, Kyle Verreynne
