International umpire Richard Illingworth has received worldwide recognition after winning the David Shepherd Trophy for ICC umpire of the Year Award.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has named England's Richard Illingworth the ICC Referee of the Year 2022. As per the details, the ICC has awarded the former cricketer as the best umpire of the year for the second time after 2019.
Illingworth, who has been a umpire for over 20 years, is known for his consistency and accuracy on the pitch. He has refereed many high profile matches including the ICC Cricket World Cup and the Indian Premier League. His experience and knowledge of the game has earned him the respect of players and other umpires alike.
The ICC umpire of the Year award is presented to an official who has performed exceptionally well throughout the year as determined by the ICC Referee Performance and Training Manager and a panel of former Elite umpires.
Richard Illingworth received the award following a rigorous evaluation process which took into account a number of factors including the umpire's performance on the pitch, his ability to direct players and his consistency in making correct decisions.
Illingworth was also one of 16 empires selected for the 2019 World Cup in England, where he umpired the semi-final match between India and New Zealand.
He was named ICC Referee of the Year 2019 and awarded the David Shepherd Trophy for his outstanding performance throughout the year.
The England-born official was appointed one of the on-field umpire for the 2021 ICC World Test Championship Final between India and New Zealand in June 2021.
He has also represented England at 25 one-day internationals and at the 1992 and 1996 Cricket World Cups.
