Ashwin became the third Indian to reach the milestone of 700 wickets in international cricket on Wednesday. His 700th victim was Alzarri Joseph. Joseph wanted Ashwin's ball to cross the field. However, Jaydev Unadkat took the catch.
That was Ashwin's fourth wicket of the innings. Above him is another spinner Harbhajan Singh. His wicket number in international cricket is 707. Ashwin has a chance to overtake Harbhajan in the ongoing two-match Test series.
India's former head coach Anil Kumble tops the list. He took 953 wickets in 401 matches. The off-spinner took five wickets with the ball as well as 700 wickets on the first day of the Dominica Test. This was his third fifth-wicket haul against the Caribbean in his Test career. Ashwin now has more five-wicket hauls than the previous holder, the English bowler James Anderson. He has now taken 33 five-wicket hauls in the longer format, surpassing Anderson's previous mark of 32.
