Pietersen is playing for the Melbourne Stars in the ongoing season and after the match against Melbourne Renegades on Saturday night, he announced that this season will be his last.
He announced on a day when the cricket fans will miss him even more as he scored his best knock in this season so far. He scored 40 runs from 30 balls.
After the match in the press conference, he announced his retirement from the BBL: "I'm done and dusted. I want it desperately at the moment ... but I don't think I will want it in 10 months' time. I just don't see myself wanting to play cricket in December."
Pietersen also talked about his love for Melbourne and he wants to stay involved with the Stars: "This franchise has been so good for me at the end of my career. I love Melbourne and I've actually really grown to love Australia and have a really good rapport with a lot of the Australian public. So to have some sort of involvement in the Stars going forward, because of how much I love this club, would be something of immense value to me."
The 37-year old batsman defines his career by ups and downs: "I’m coming to the end of my career. My career is not going to be defined on how I play in the Big Bash. My career has already been defined by all my ups and downs though a long career."
