Bangladesh Under-19 coach Naveed Nawaz wants to be certain that he is 100% prepared, even though he cannot promise to win the World Cup again before beginning over.
Under Naveed, Bangladesh Under-19 won the ICC U-19 World Cup trophy in 2020. He is back again with the team after working with Sri Lanka in the middle.
The next U-19 World Cup will be in 2026 and Naveed wants to build team for that. “Within two years, we have a two-year period to get the best out of the cricketers. And most of these players haven't toured outside of Bangladesh. So it's an opportunity for us to develop them and develop the personalities. Not only cricket, develop their personalities, develop them holistically and see what comes out of it,” Naveed said.
“It's too early to say anything. And also I think it's not the right thing to say that we are going to win a World Cup or anything like that. It's about developing the group and developing their capabilities. We know what capabilities are required to compete in a World Cup, compete with the big teams. So we'll use the next 18 months to push our players and get their capabilities up so that we can challenge and push any team in the world. Yeah, we have plans, the game development department of Bangladesh Cricket Board has plans to acclimatize, maybe arrange pre-World Cup tours to those parts of the world. Like I said, it's too early to say, but having said that it's a part of the responsibility of a sportsperson to adapt to whatever conditions they are competing in,” he added.
So, Naveed wants to ensure that the cricketers will have the ability to adopt with any conditions playing outside the country. That’s why the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is planning to arrange U-19 matches in different countries. “And as a coaching unit and as a cricket board, I think our planning is to have the best preparation in the next 18 months to make sure that the adopting capabilities get better. And also the boys will not feel that we have only played cricket in Bangladesh, that we don't know conditions outside of Bangladesh. We'll make sure that we play plenty of cricket outside of Bangladesh, and we are ready by end of 2025 to compete anywhere in the world,” Naveed further said.
