In the second day of the Chattogram Test, Hasan Mahmud once again took up the nightwatchman role, yet his brief seven-ball stay for three runs failed to stabilize Bangladesh’s innings.

Sent in to protect skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, Hasan could not shield the batting lineup, which faced a swift downfall, losing three wickets for 29 runs. Mahmud’s dismissal added to the early losses of Shadman Islam, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, and Zakir Hasan, and ultimately Shanto had to step in. However, with Mominul Haque's support, he saw the day through cautiously.

When asked about the nightwatchman strategy, Bangladesh spin coachMushtaq Ahmed responded, “I can’t confirm for certain, but that’s the role of a nightwatchman—to protect the main batter. A strong partnership would allow a good score; that’s why it’s crucial to safeguard our core batters.”

Struggling with South Africa's relentless batting, Bangladesh could not bowl them out even after taking their sixth wicket at 423 runs. Wiaan Mulder and Senuran Muthusamy withstood the attack, which Bangladesh coach Mushtaq Ahmed acknowledged was challenging. He admitted, “It’s been an issue for the last three series. Taijul bowled brilliantly, but the South Africans countered well on this flat pitch.” He emphasized the need for the team to focus on quickly taking lower-order wickets, an area that has been lacking lately.
