Former Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza retired from T20I cricket all on a sudden in 2017. But the decision was not his personal decision, it was assumed then. Finally, Mashrafe has opened up about his retirement saga. Mashrafe reveals he was 'forced to retire'

Mashrafe, the most successful captain of Bangladesh cricket, abruptly decided to retire from T20 cricket. During the toss in the first match of the two-match T20 series in Sri Lanka, he said that the second match of the series was going to be the last T20 match of his career. In an interview given to private TV channel Ekattor TV, Mashrafe talked about this issue. The 37-year old pcaer said in a very touchy voice that he did not get help from anyone in his time of need. He did not want to go against everyone and survive in the team. So he was forced to retire from T20 cricket. “If I talk frankly, I had to do it (retirement) there. From whom I got support in my time? Before the 2011 World Cup, I was not taken even after the doctor reported that I was fit to play. Then when I retired in 2017, I didn't say anything to anyone,” Mashrafe said. He added, “When I arrived at the team hotel in Sri Lanka, a meeting was held with me. Only then did I realize that something was happening. Whenever the T20 cricket comes up, I see something different. I also thought there was no need to be against everyone. Then the question may come why I did not retire from ODIs. That's because I'm also a player.” Although Mashrafe has been asked to formally recognize his retirement, he has refused, according to media reports. But Mashrafe says he didn’t tell that. “Where did I talk officially? Haven't you seen the formality of the world? And why would it be Papon Bhai's [Nazmul Hassan Papon, BCB president] fault? There is no need to call the board president here. First of all, the selectors and coaches will say that it is ok, you have played for Bangladesh cricket for 18-20 years. We want to move forward now. I will not play in the next World Cup, this is what they want. They could say that there is a specific match that you can play and move on. “They could have officially informed me, they have to come to the media- that’s not the fact. Only before the Zimbabwe series did Papon Bhai say something to me, but could not say directly. I understood that it was difficult for him to say. But when you become a professional, you have to show a professional attitude,” the ‘Narail Express’ said.
