Star Australian opener Usman Khawaja showered praise on legendary Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, highlighting his strategic approach and always having a well-thought-out plan. As Australia gears up to face India in the prestigious Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Ashwin's impressive record against the Aussies stands out. In 22 Test matches and 42 innings against Australia, Ashwin has claimed 114 wickets at an economy rate of 2.70. On Australian soil, he has played 10 Test matches, taking 39 wickets at an economy rate of 2.93.
The highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar series between India and Australia is set to commence on November 22, with the opening Test taking place in Perth.
In recent years, India has gained the upper hand over Australia in the Border-Gavaskar series. India has secured victory in the last four consecutive series, including two triumphs on Australian soil during the 2018-19 and 2020-21 seasons. This success has bolstered India's standing in the series, with India having won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 10 times compared to Australia's five victories. Australia's most recent series win came during the 2014-15 season, and their last win in India was in the 2004-05 season.
In an interview with Star Sports, Khawaja praised Ashwin for consistently staying a step ahead in the game. The Australian batter also expressed admiration for the Indian spinner's "cricketing brain," highlighting his strategic acumen.
"Ravi is a very good bowler. He is very strategic, he always has a plan. He always tries to figure it out. He is trying to get ahead of the game, one step ahead of the game, which I respect. I respect his cricketing brain. It's always cool to play against, yeah I look forward to the challenge," Khawaja said.
Australia will have to be wary of Ashwin in the upcoming series in November. It remains to be seen if Australia manages to topple India, or will India prove to be just too strong.
